Oliver Russell Designer Gets Her Own Show
6-26-2008
Our own Colleen Morgan unveiled "Bookends" -- a whimsical series using old hardbound books as canvases -- during this month's First Thursday at Flying M Coffeehouse. A graphic designer by day, and illustrator by night, the idea for the series was the result of a search for the perfect pair of bookends for her home.
When her search proved fruitless, the talented artist decided to create some herself. To strengthen the concept, Colleen illustrated the book covers, painting so the spine of the book appears to be sitting on the shelf. The characters acting as bookends are inspired by the books themselves, and feature vignettes from James Fenimore Cooper's The Two Admirals, Ethelyn's Mistake by Mary Jane Holmes, among others.
Art and book lovers alike will surely enjoy this show. "Bookends" is on display through July 1 at Flying M Coffeehouse, 500 W. Idaho St., in downtown Boise.
