This makes it two years running that we’ve made the “B Corp Best for Workers” list, which honors businesses that earn a worker score in the top 10% of more than 2,000 Certified B Corporations® who have taken the B Impact Assessment. The recognition comes from B the Change Media and the nonprofit B Lab®, the latter of which oversees the B Impact Assessment.
The list takes the shopworn phrase “People are our most valuable asset” and puts some bite into it through measurable evidence of a company’s impact on the people who work there. This recognition is near the pinnacle if you’re trying to create a great workplace. B Corps generally rate quite highly in the area of worker treatment, so to rank among the best of this group is really an accomplishment.
The B Corp certification assesses a company’s relationship with its workforce. This includes measuring how workers are treated in areas such as compensation, benefits, training, and ownership opportunities. It also focuses on the overall work environment fostered in the company through management and worker communication, job flexibility, worker safety and health practices, and overall corporate culture.
The median worker score for all businesses that have completed the B Impact Assessment is 18. Oliver Russell registered a score of 33 for our worker practices (which contributed to our highest-ever overall B Corp assessment score of 108).
The B Impact Assessment (BIA) is a free online tool designed to comprehensively measure the positive impact that businesses generate for their communities, customers, workers, and the environment.
In all, 124 B Corps were recognized as being Best in the World for Workers, including companies such as Dansko, New Belgium Brewing, and King Arthur Flour.
B the Change Media and B Lab also recognize other categories from the impact assessment, including Best Overall, Best for Community, Best for Customers, and Best for Environment.
One of the great things about the B Impact Assessment is that it gives you a framework for continuous improvement. We’re all about advancing and have used our competitive fire to increase our overall rating from 82 in our first assessment (January 2012, when we were the 488th company in the world to become a B Corp) to 89 in 2014 and most recently to 108 in 2016. The higher we score, the more positive impact we’re creating in the world—pretty important to a company whose purpose is to improve the lives of all we touch through meaningful work and the power of social enterprise.
We’ll be recertifying in less than a year from now, so it will be exciting to see how we’ve improved our operations and impact in the world by intentionally acting on the components of the assessment. Our goal is to one day be included among the B Corps that are ranked as Best Overall. And of course, the people who work here will be responsible for that when it happens. Some day.
